Aff Friendly Spyware Buster

Spent some time going through Ben Edelman’s site today (it’s recovered from the DDOS attack) and he’s really put together a phenomenal amount of information in regards to parasites, spyware, thiefware, etc. Well documented stuff!

You can view his most recent presentation here that he prepared for a recent online affiliate conference:

An Overview of Software Downloads:
Spyware, Adware, Stealware & Thiefware

I wonder if he’ll provide documentation and video on Google’s new toolbar? Congrats Goog – ya fit right in with these fine folks now. 😆

Browster’s Here To ‘Help’

Seems there’s a new free BHO (Browser Helper Object) on the market that will affect how our websites will be viewed.

Browster describes itself as:

What is Browster?
Browster is the quickest way to browse through search results and other lists of links. It is a free browser plugin that automatically prefetches links and provides a fast preview window to view a page quickly before committing to go there. Browster’s preloading and previewing capability can cut the time required to go through search results and other links by as much as 50%. This helps internet users achieve more effective searches in less time. Browster is available today for Internet Explorer™ and soon for Firefox™.

So I loaded up the beast and took it for a whirl. Here’s what I’ve found:

When making a search in Google, the results pages will show as normal, but with a small lightening bolt box added beside the results links.

Serps With Browster

By hovering your mouse over this box, you’ll get a popup preview pane for the website:

CNN Browster Preview

You’ll notice the contextual ads framed above the CNN page. You can move around CNN within this preview pane, I clicked on the ‘Have A Blog, Lose Your Job’ article and got this:

Inside Preview Window

If one wanted to, they could view your entire site within the Browster. All the while your website is being viewed with their contextual ads on top.

I did visit a few affiliate sites and watched the affiliate codes – it does seem to leave these intact. Someone may want to dig deeper on this though. However, if you have Google Adsense or other contextual ads displayed on the top of your website, get ready to uncross your eyes when viewing through the Browster. Several inches of text ads displayed and the columns are not aligned, very messy.

Also I did a full scan in both Spybot and Adaware before and after the installation – seems to be bug free and not dropping nasties.

Thanks to Threadwatch for the heads up.

Framed Pages And Adsense Problem

ABestWeb Thread

There’s been a problem reported over on ABW about Ask Jeeves messing with the ads being displayed on adsense.

Here are Affiliate Boards ads shown while viewing from Ask Jeeves:

Affiliate Boards – Framed In Ask Jeeves

I’m seeing ads for cold medicine, flooring, cough drops and homeopathics. Pretty targeted stuff! 😆

When viewing Affiliate Boards directly:

Affiliate Boards Straight Link

I see ads for increasing traffic, get paid weekly, affiliate program and stock software.

Seems the adsense affiliate id stays the same (Ask Jeeves isn’t swapping it out with their own). However, there’s an obvious problem with ads not being targeted. This will definitely affect the click thru rate.

It looks like this isn’t a problem with Ask Jeeves specifically, but more a problem with framed sites.

Commission Junction Sales Down?

Today is February 9th and I haven’t had *one single sale* this month on CJ. I have a mix of encrypted links and non-encrypted links. Clicks seem to be tracking just fine. Zero sales.

My adwords campaigns pointing to pages mainly built on CJ are being paused as we speak. IMO something’s wrong somewhere and I’m not paying to ride it out. Thankfully SAS seems to have worked through yesterday’s problems, so I’ll turn things up there.

Hopefully things will swing back in time to get a CJ check next month!

Brand New Shopping Directory

Here’s a shopping directory a friend of mine just launched:

It’s shopping related so submit all your aff sites and get them listed!

Directory is brand spanking new, so there’s no Google PR yet – but get in now to be at the top of the results (right now it’s bannerboxes loading – manually submitted sites will be listed above them and will be text links).

And of course – free listings.

Adding RSS Feeds To Your Website

Wow if you’ve ever wanted to try adding rss to your site, Carp is the way to go!

Carp – Free Download

I played with it a bit yesterday and couldn’t believe how easy it was to set up. I’ve added it to one content site and will be adding it to another right away.

The instructions are very easy to follow and you’ll need 5 minutes to get this going. You can choose whatever feed you’d like to display, this helps you provide relevant content to your site’s theme.

The purpose of adding rss feeds to your website is to provide your visitors fresh, updated content when visiting your site. You can set it to update every minute or every 24 hrs, very flexible. Since it can slow your site’s load time if you have the feeds updating too quickly, I chose to update every 12 hours.

Now every time Google, Yahoo and all the spiders come to visit my site, they’ll find new content. It will make those spiders want to come back for more! 😆

Have fun with this – it’s a big two thumbs up.
