I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago with the US$ vs AU$ exchange rate. For a while there I was earning US dollars that were worth nearly 2 Aussie dollars each, then the Aussie started gaining against the Greenback until it got up to US$0.80, and has now settled at around $0.70 - 0.75.

As for the US$ remaining the dominant currency on the net, I'd say that's bound to change. But probably not in terms of websites written in English. As e-commerce continues to grow in Europe, the Euro will increase its presence. And clearly the Chinese Yuan is going to be huge, but the English-based web won't take much notice.

I too am Canadian and this is a bit of a shocker for me... I wonder if Google had a heads up when they goofed up the exchange rates pulling the Canadian dollar out ahead of the US dollar.... LOL...J/K. :)
