Become.com Now Live

By Terry

I just received an email from Become.com that the search engine is now open to the public (it was in beta testing). See what you think by trying them here:

Become.com

Our research service enables you to locate valuable (and often hard to find) shopping-related research: buying guides, reviews, articles, specifications, forums, merchants, and a variety of other relevant information.

Now let’s hope this engine will be able to compete a bit with Google and send us some traffic!

  1. Bah. Is it just me, or does this look like (not very targeted) subset of Google search results? I’m guessing they had a human “researcher” (http://become.com/jobs.html#researcher) manually flag all “shopping related” sites for their crawlers.

Is become.com’s search for “iPod” :

…any better than a Google search for “iPod reviews”??

  2. Ick. Ok I’m going to spend a bit of time now picking through their results and see what I come up with. I was really hoping this engine was going to tap into sites that don’t otherwise enjoy good placement in Goog’s SERPs and we’d find some good stuff.

Thanks for the heads up Derek!
